GREEN BAY – Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson agreed on this much Saturday: They’re both impressed with Donald Driver’s fancy footwork on Dancing With the Stars.
The Green Bay Packers coach and general manager also agreed on something else: They wouldn’t address the veteran wide receiver’s future with the team.
Asked directly if Driver, who turned 37 in February, will go to training camp with the team, Thompson replied, “I would never speculate on something like that. He’s dancing right now. Doing good, too.”
At the NFL Meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. last month, McCarthy did insinuate that Driver would return – at least for training camp, and Driver has said on multiple occasions that he’s willing to accept a pay cut from his scheduled $5 million salary-cap number in order to be back with the team he’s spent his entire 13-year career with.
But with practice-squad receivers Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel waiting in the wings, it’s possible that the team will release Driver despite the fact that he appears to have something left in the tank.
When asked if he was watching Driver on DWTS, McCarthy was more than happy to answer.
"Of course. I didn't realize it was such a tough thing for a man that they watching Dancing With the Stars. And if I'm not at home, we have to DVR it and watch it as a family,” McCarthy said. “We're rooting him on and voting eight times like you're supposed to. He's doing a great job; keeping in shape, that's for sure. Not that that was ever an issue with Donald. It's a great experience for him and his family.
But when asked if Driver will be at training camp and be a part of this team, McCarthy wouldn’t go there.
“No reason to speculate on that,” McCarthy replied. “I'm just going to follow Ted's answer to that question.”
