GREEN BAY – There are more than a few folks who seem to take issue with the things talkative tight end Jermichael Finley says from time to time, but Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy says he’s fine with his most loquacious player and his occasional eyebrow-raising quotes.
Asked by a reporter on Tuesday if he was OK with Finley occasionally saying things that are “individually focused,” McCarthy replied with a smirk: “That’s nicely said.”
Then, asked whether many of those public quotes are just Jermichael being Jermichael, McCarthy smiled again.
“I think we all know the answer to the question. Jermichael is an energetic young man,” McCarthy said. “(He’s) very expressive in the way he goes about his business. He’s extremely talented. It’s rewarding to watch him grow in all aspects. He has had an excellent offseason. He’s in great shape. He had a little setback missing two days of practice. But there are different personalities throughout the football team. Him and I are different in that way, obviously.”
Most recently, Finley incurred the wrath of some Packers fans who didn’t like how he said he planned on “freestyling” this season and said he and quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t have “chemistry” last season. In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Finley said he planned to travel to California after this week’s mandatory minicamp and before training camp opens July 26 to spend some time with Rodgers and get on the same page.
Told of Finley’s plans Tuesday, Rodgers chuckled and said, “Those are just rumors at this point.”
