Always something: Spitz, Wells sidelined

Oct 15, 2009 -- 4:43pm

GREEN BAY – Another day, another issue on the Packers’ offensive line. Thursday, both of their top centers, Jason Spitz (back) and Scott Wells (hamstring) left practice early and landed on the injury report. Undrafted rookie free agent Evan Dietrich-Smith wound up taking all the snaps with the No. 1 offense in the 11-on-11 period.

First, here’s the full report:

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Full participation – S Atari Bigby (knee); LT Chad Clifton (ankle); LG Daryn Colledge (knee); RB Brandon Jackson (ankle); LB Jeremy Thompson (knee); LB Brady Poppinga (illness);

Limited participation – C/G Jason Spitz (back); C Scott Wells (hamstring); DE Cullen Jenkins (ankle); NT Ryan Pickett (hip); RT Mark Tauscher (knee);

Did not participate – RB DeShawn Wynn (knee).

Out – FB Korey Hall (calf).

DETROIT LIONS

Full participation – T Gosder Cherilus (shoulder); TE Brandon Pettigrew (hamstring).

Limited participation – LB Jordan Dizon (foot); LB Ernie Sims (shoulder); FB Jerome Felton (shoulder); TE Casey FitzSimmons (thigh);

Did not participate – QB Matthew Stafford (knee); WR Calvin Johnson (knee); DT Grady Jackson (knee); DT Sammie Hill (ankle); DE Jason Hunter (ankle); RB Maurice Morris (Hip); S Ko Simpson (hamstring); DE Dewayne White, DE (hamstring).

After practice, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said of Spitz’s back and Wells’ hamstring, “I don't think they're serious but we felt that we needed to send them up top (to) let the trainers work on them.” McCarthy said both players went through individual drills and the jog-through and departed during the first group period of practice.

Spitz said after practice that the back was bothering him last week against Minnesota but he played through it.

“It’s not a big deal, man. I played last week with it,” he said. “I’m good to go.”

Meanwhile, Clifton went from being limited on Wednesday to being a full participant Thursday, while Bigby made it through his second straight day of practice unscathed. McCarthy said that “they both have had two positive days.”

Poppinga, who missed practices Monday and Wednesday with the flu, said he was not infected with the H1N1 virus and felt fine. He figures to remain the starter in the base defense, with rookie Clay Matthews playing extensively in the nickel alignment, although McCarthy wouldn’t say for sure that Poppinga will start against the Lions.

“It was just the regular flu. I’m feeling good,” Poppinga said. “I’m not contagious. I mean, I kissed my wife. Unless she’s got a much stronger immune system than you guys, you guys should be well off.”

In Detroit, No. 1 overall draft pick Matthew Stafford (knee) and star receiver Calvin Johnson (knee) did not practice and appear unlikely to play against the Packers.
