Kampman, Poppinga sidelined; Lang to start at right tackle?

Nov 11, 2009 -- 3:20pm

GREEN BAY – With Aaron Kampman still feeling the effects of a concussion and Brady Poppinga with a sore quadriceps, the Packers are down to rookie seventh-round pick Brad Jones at left outside linebacker – at least at the moment. And on the offensive line, T.J. Lang appears ticketed for right tackle Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys – barring a quick recovery by Allen Barbre from a concussion suffered in last Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay.

Brad Jones got most of the snaps at left outside linebacker in practice Wednesday with Aaron Kampman (concussion) still sidelined and Poppinga (quadriceps) also sitting out. Asked about Kampman’s status for practice this week, coach Mike McCarthy said “the earliest he'll get back is Friday.”

McCarthy said Tuesday night was the first he’d heard of Poppinga’s injury. “It just showed up,” McCarthy said. “He's having an MRI done.”

The Packers’ other option at left OLB is Jeremy Thompson, who McCarthy said is also taking snaps at the position.

“We're working all of our different combinations, so as far as who is starting, time will answer that,” McCarthy said. “I couldn't tell you if Brady is going to be back this week, I couldn't tell you if Aaron is going to make it. But Brad has done a lot of good things, particularly on special teams. He's been very productive. He missed some time there in training camp and has really, really progressed, and he'll be ready if he has that opportunity.”

While McCarthy said Mark Tauscher (knee) has an “outside chance” of playing against the Cowboys and Allen Barbre (concussion) did take some snaps at the position, T.J. Lang got most of the work at right tackle and appears likely to start there.

McCarthy said Barbre is “further ahead, closer to getting back on the field” than Kampman in their comparative recoveries from concussions.

Little-used Breno Giacomini saw action at both tackle spots in practice, McCarthy said, while the other four line spots – Chad Clifton at left tackle, Daryn Colledge at left guard, Scott Wells at center and Josh Sitton at right guard – will remain the same.

McCarthy said Jordy Nelson, who practiced for the first time since suffering a knee injury against Detroit, probably won’t return to returning kicks but could be back at receiver against the Cowboys.

“We'll see how the week goes,” McCarthy said. “I thought he looked good out there today. He came on strong last week during his workouts. How much he plays or if he plays, we're going to really let the week sort that out … It's great to have Jordy back, great to have him healthy.”

McCarthy made it sound as if tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) is still another week away from returning.

“(He) has had a great week of work (and) actually had a very very good workout yesterday, but the last hurdle as always is, here in Green Bay, is they've got to be cleared by the medical staff. We always play the high end of player safety. I know Jermichael wants to play. Everybody is excited to get him back on the field. But Dr. McKenzie has been doing this a long time. So until he clears that last hurdle, he won't be playing. He's getting close.“
