Packers sign cornerback Bell

Nov 23, 2009 -- 9:24pm

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers got some much-needed help at cornerback Monday, and although his name likely won’t ring a bell with many fans, ex-Denver Broncos cornerback Josh Bell may very well be able to help the team Thursday at Detroit.

Bell worked out for the Packers on Monday and signed later in the day. The Packers had not announced the roster move as of Monday night.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Bell entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Baylor with the San Diego Chargers last season but was cut at the end of training camp. The Broncos added him to their practice squad, then promoted him to the 53-man roster after All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey was injured. Bell ended up playing in nine games last season, making five starts. He wound up making 43 tackles and breaking up four passes.

Bell returned to the Broncos for training camp this summer but suffered a knee injury late in Denver’s final exhibition game and was released Sept. 10. The Broncos do run a 3-4 scheme under new coordinator Mike Nolan, so there should be some commonalities with the Packers’ scheme under Dom Capers. Bell could also see time on special teams.

The Packers figure to use the same group of cornerbacks Thursday against the Lions as they did after losing two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Al Harris to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee with 10:49 left in their 30-24 victory over San Francisco Sunday. That would put Tramon Williams in as the starter, move Jarrett Bush up to the third cornerback in the nickel defense and rookie sixth-round draft pick Brandon Underwood as the fourth corner in the dime.

Meanwhile, practice-squad linebacker Cyril Obiozor is likely to take the place of linebacker Aaron Kampman, who like Harris suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee.

I am in agreement with Leona regarding Bush but perhaps with preperation he will be better, and not because he can't get worse. I was surprised to here your assessment of Underwood.
How is Obiozer looking. I know he was a Coach Greene's project. Has he improved in practice and what do you expect of him on the field?

Who wants to bet me that at least one time in the Detroit game you will see a Lions wide receiver going into the endzone with the footballl and #24 from the Packers about 10 yards behind running and stumbling after him.

Get this Josh Bell guy up to speed quickly, so by the Baltimore game we hopefully won't have to see #24 on the field except for Special Teams.

#24 does not belong on an NFL
