Wells set to start; Ford elevated

Nov 25, 2009 -- 1:46pm

GREEN BAY – Scott Wells is good to go.

While the Packers will hardly be at full-strength against Detroit for Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game – you know, with those pesky season-ending knee injuries to Aaron Kampman and Al Harris – they did get some good news on the injury front Wednesday when the veteran center was able to practice in full after having swelling in his knee following Sunday’s win over San Francisco.

“We feel good about Scott,” coach Mike McCarthy said.

Wells is listed as probable, as are linebacker Brandon Chillar (hand), left tackle Chad Clifton (knee), halfback Ryan Grant (neck), defensive end Cullen Jenkins (ankle), defensive end Johnny Jolly (), fullback John Kuhn (hand), right guard Josh Sitton (back) and cornerback Charles Woodson (hip). Backup right tackle Allen Barbre (ankle) and veteran halfback Ahman Green (groin) are listed as doubtful.

“I feel good,” said Wells, who missed practice time last week following a concussion. “I had a lot of swelling in (the knee) Monday and Tuesday, so basically we waited on the swelling to go down so I could bend it again. Nothing’s torn. The MRI was clear. It’s just a whole bunch of fluid in there, it swelled up pretty big, and I couldn’t get in a stance yesterday.”

Wells played through the injury against the 49ers and didn’t think anything of it at the time.

“It happened in the first series. I thought it was just a bruise,” Wells said. “And then when I was at home on Sunday night, it swelled up on me. I left here thinking I’d be fine.”

Meanwhile, the Packers made it official and announced they had promoted practice-squad cornerback Trevor Ford to the 53-man roster.

Also, Wells had the line of the day after being congratulated on the arrival of he and wife Julie’s third child, son Kingston Knox Wells. Asked by Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel if Kingston is a girl or a boy, Wells shot Bedard an all-in-good-fun glare, then replied, “It’s Kingston, not Queenston.”
